“It Has Been Such a Good Life”: What Hawaiʻi Families Really Need After You’re Gone

Updated: Sep 3

When Anna Harp lost her father, Rudolph Clausing, in early 2021, she never got the chance to say goodbye. COVID-19 protocols kept her family apart during his final days battling lung disease. He passed away at just 66 years old, leaving Anna — only 27 at the time — devastated.

As her mother collected his belongings from the hospital, she came across something unexpected: a notebook. Inside it, in Rudolph’s handwriting, were just seven words that would change everything for Anna:

“It has been such a good life.”

Seven simple words — yet they offered Anna a sense of peace and emotional closure that no legal document ever could.

What Families in Hawaiʻi Truly Need After You’re Gone

Here in Hawaiʻi, where ʻohana means everything, your loved ones want more than just a will or trust. They want to feel your presence, hear your voice, and know your heart, especially in those tender moments after you're gone.

Sure, financial inheritances matter. But time and again, it’s the emotional connection, the guidance, and the stories you leave behind that your family will treasure most. If those aren’t in place, your loved ones may feel lost, questioning your wishes, unsure how to move forward, and missing the chance to hold on to something deeply personal.

A Real Legacy Starts with Love, Not Just Legal Documents

Most traditional estate plans focus solely on dividing assets and avoiding probate. But what about your values? Your voice? The lessons you’ve learned that you want your children or grandchildren to carry with them?

That’s where my Life & Legacy Planning process comes in. As an estate planning attorney based here in Honolulu, I help clients across Hawaiʻi build plans that do more than transfer wealth — they preserve wisdom.

What Makes Life & Legacy Planning Different?

Clarity, Not Just Paperwork

A complete plan doesn’t just outline who gets what — it offers clear, loving instructions that remove the guesswork during a difficult time. From managing online accounts to keeping family traditions alive, your Life & Legacy Plan helps your ʻohana navigate life without you.

Preparation for Real-Life Financial Questions

How will your spouse afford the mortgage? What happens to your children’s education fund? How can your loved ones maintain financial security while honoring your memory? These are the questions your family will face — and your plan should answer.

A Legacy They Can Hear and Feel

One of the most meaningful parts of my process is your Life & Legacy Recording — a video message created just for your loved ones. It’s your opportunity to share memories, values, hopes, and love in your own voice. It’s often the most treasured part of the planning process.

Imagine your grandchildren hearing your voice years from now, learning about where they came from, and understanding what mattered most to you. This is the kind of legacy that shapes lives long after you’re gone.

A Local Guide for Life

When you create a Life & Legacy Plan with me, you’re not left to figure things out on your own — and neither is your family. I’m here to update your plan as life evolves and to support your loved ones when the time comes.

Build a Plan That Speaks to the Heart

In Honolulu and across the islands, your legacy is about more than property — it’s about your presence.

If you're ready to create a plan that goes beyond the legal documents and gives your ʻohana the peace and guidance they deserve, I invite you to connect. Let’s create a Life & Legacy Plan that says, in every way that matters: “It has been such a good life.”
